How much does a TYPO3 update cost?

[Translate to English:] Kostet eines TYPO3 Upgrades?

When I recommend a TYPO3 update to my customers, the question “How much will it cost?” quickly arises. Understandably so—you want to have at least a rough estimate. Here, I would like to explain how I calculate the costs for a TYPO3 update.

Of course, the version jump is important for a TYPO3 update. An update from version 8 to TYPO3 12 or even 13 naturally costs more than one from 11 or 12 to 13. However, the work involved in updating the TYPO3 system itself is often limited. This can change, however, if your templates are still in the fileadmin folder, your site is multilingual, and a language file in the fileadmin directory is referenced in the Fluid templates. In this case, I have to create a site package and move all templates from fileadmin into it. Depending on the complexity of the templates, this can take some time.

Costs of a TYPO3 update – TYPO3 extensions

One of the most important parts of a TYPO3 update is the extensions (or plugins) used. The older a TYPO3 system is, the more extensions I often find on websites. People like to try out extensions, but in the end they don't use them and don't delete them consistently. This not only inflates the extension list in the backend, but also the database, which then affects the performance of a website. So, before the TYPO3 update, I like to make sure that I remove any unnecessary ballast here. In the end, this also helps to keep the costs of a TYPO3 update low.

Only then do I check which TYPO3 extensions need to be updated and which need to be replaced. Ultimately, the website should function exactly as it did before, ideally even better and/or faster than before. An extension that is also available for the target version is naturally easier to update than one that needs to be replaced. The most expensive option here is often a self-programmed extension. I usually have to charge for such an update based on the amount of work involved.

(ohne Erweiterungen)

TYPO3-Sicherheitsupdates
Updates are relatively quick and easy to perform on small websites with up to approx. 10 pages without extensions within a release (e.g., 12.4.20 to 12.4.27). This may be necessary if there are TYPO3 security updates. I also do this automatically for some customers.
from approx. 80.00 €
TYPO3 release change
A minor release change (e.g., from 12 to 13) can no longer be made in the live system. So I create a clone of the site, change the TYPO3 version there, and switch the update after your approval.
from approx. 200,- €
TYPO3 release change across multiple versions
For example, when switching from TYPO3 10 to 12 or 13. This is similar to a “minor release change” on a clone that is switched at the end.
from approx. 400,- €
Major TYPO3 release change
If no changes have been made to your system for several years, it is likely that, in addition to the update, a number of adjustments to the templates will be necessary and, under certain circumstances, an update of the JavaScript libraries (e.g., jQuery) may also be advisable. Even very old TYPO3 pages can be updated.
from approx. 800,- €
