Wordpress move

Moving a Wordpress system made easy

As Wordpress is a very popular system for managing websites (according to https://de.statista.com/, it has a market share of around 64% in March 2022), it is also a popular target for various bots. If they find an outdated and insecure system, the system can be hacked and misused for a wide variety of purposes. Infections are often so perfidious that the operator of the system only finds out about them via detours.
This makes it all the more important to always keep the system up to date and to create regular backups.
Here you can find out how to create Wordpress backups with just one plugin and at the same time have the option of using it to transfer your Wordpress site to another provider.

1 Step: Install the plugin for the backup

In the Wordpress backend under Plugins, select “Install” directly next to the title “Plugins”. There you can search for a plugin on the right-hand side.
I have already used the Wordpress plugin “duplicator” to move several Wordpress sites. It is of course also suitable for creating backups of the system before you want to make an update.
So search for duplicator and click on the “Install now” button in the search results. Then all you have to do is activate the plugin and you will find the options for Duplicator in the main menu on the left.

Step 2: Create a backup of the current system

Under “Duplicator/Archive” you can view and download archives that have already been created, or create a new archive under “Create new”.
This Wordpress plugin guides you through the entire process and at the end offers the download of just two files, the archive itself can be quite large depending on the size of the page, the file “installer.php” on the other hand is only a few kilobytes.

At the end there is also the option of downloading both files at once. Backup done!

Step 3: Set up the archive on the new server.

Upload the archive you have just downloaded and installer.php to the directory on the target system where the site will be located in future. As this may take some time, you can create the database with the provider in the meantime and make a note of the access data for it. You will later need the host (often “localhost”), the user name (user), the password and the database name. Perhaps the upload will be finished by then and you will be able to call up the address "https://Your-New-Domain.tld/installer.php in your browser.

The system will now be checked and you may need to change a few settings here and there. How and where you can do this depends very much on the provider you have chosen.

If the installer finds the system to be OK, you will be asked for the access data for the database and it will almost summarize the data to be changed again at the end. Not only paths will have changed, but perhaps also the domain. However, the installer usually finds this out itself.
After extracting the files and importing the database, you will be asked to log into the Wordpress backend and delete the installation data.

The move is now almost complete...

Step 4: Checking the new system

Take a look around the backend and frontend of the site. Does everything look the way you are used to? Can you change and save content in the backend? Upload images?
Great! Then you have just successfully moved your WordPress site!
